The Tolerant Youth of Tower Hamlets

Priest hurt in faith-hate attack

A priest has been attacked in the grounds of his church, in what police described as a "faith-hate" crime.

Canon Michael Ainsworth, 57, was injured by two Asian youths at the church, in Tower Hamlets, east London.

Canon Ainsworth said a third youth watched as he suffered cuts, bruises and black eyes in the assault at the church of St George-in-the-East.

The youths also jeered at the priest for being a churchman in the attack on Wednesday night, the Met Police said.

An appeal for witnesses has been made.

This won't be big news. Indeed it's only a small faith-hate assault. I suspect though if it were a couple of white skinheads attacking a lowly Imam then it be a lot bigger news than it is. It would almost certainly would spurn several Comment is Free pieces lamenting the intolerance and Islamophobia present in today's society.

When the tabloid newspapers pick up on such stories, they are often labelled as racist fear-mongers, who probably made it all up anyway. Yet if the hypothetical situation I suggested were to happen, the liberal-left blogs and and liberal-left press would be all over it. It then would not be fear-mongering at all, but a righteous attack on the racist nature of British society.

I wonder if it's a just a coincidence that an Iraqi priest was also slain? One does wonder where the youth of Tower Hamlets (who were recently attacking Jews with stones at Holocaust Memorial Day) get their 'inspiration' from?

There have beensome arrests and court appearances and two "youths" are now on bail for the offence. One of them rejoices in the delightful name of Babul Islam.
